From Sea to Shining Sea
Named in 1602 by English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold after his home of Falmouth in Cornwall, England. This quintessential New England coastal community has witnessed the ebb and flow of four centuries. From the Wampanoag tribe ("People of the Dawn") to courageous Yankee whalers, from salty sea captains to Revolutionary War soldiers, every nook and cove of Falmouth is home to a remarkable tale. Stroll past the house of Katherine Lee Bates the author of "America the Beautiful," or visit the shore at Falmouth Heights, where residents endured an attack by the British warship Nimrod in 1812. Stand beside the noble sentinel of Nobska Lighthouse, one of America's most historic and lovely lighthouses and then explore the former whaling port of Woods Hole.
