Description:
THE PEOPLE WHO PULLED THE OARS
On Saturday, February 27, ethnohistorian and Nantucket native Frances Ruley Karttunen will present a talk with slides on the whaleship crew members long ignored or forgotten. She is the author of THE OTHER ISLANDERS: the People Who Pulled Nantucket’s Oars. This social history tells the stories of the lives of the whaleboat oarsmen -- Wampanoag Native Americans, Azoreans, South Pacific Islanders, Asians, Cape Verdeans, and African slaves and freemen. She will illuminate the many references to the ethnic diversity on board the fictional ship PEQUOD, in Melville’s MOBY-DICK.
This What’s Falmouth Reading program is offered to the public FREE of charge with generous support from the Friends of the Falmouth Public Library.
