Description:

Higgins Gallery Features Artists from the East and West Coasts in “Calculated Color”
Layers of color crisscross Higgins Gallery at Cape Cod Community College where the diverse artwork of eight contemporary artists opens September 3rd and shows through October 2nd. Color in its many contradictory, bold, and subtle forms is the focal point of the exhibition. These selected artists from California, New York and Massachusetts gravitate towards minimalism and primarily use color to define space, express feeling or create a mood.
Guest curator Jane Lincoln brings together artists whose work is connected by their preference for geometric abstraction and distinguished by the diversity of materials they have chosen. A variety of media and techniques are represented, including acrylic on wood, oil on panel, inkjet on paper, oil on aluminum, collage, gouache and encaustic. Each artist’s exploration of process has led them to develop new techniques, revive old techniques and discover new materials.
This unique exhibition of artwork highlights simplified forms and minimal compositions, allowing color to draw attention to the subtleties in the work. “Calculated Color,” according to Lincoln, “invites you to observe what may not be visible at first glance and to embrace how color defies description.”
“Calculated Color” showcases the work of: Chris Ashley, Oakland CA, inkjet prints; Jane Lincoln, East Falmouth, woodblock prints; Joanne Mattera, New York, encaustic; Mel Prest, San Francisco CA, oil on panels; Rose Olson, Beverly, acrylic on plywood; Nancy Simonds, Boston, gouache on paper; Suzanne Ulrich, Marblehead, paper collage; Nancy White, Redwood City CA, oil on aluminum.

The public is invited to an artist talk Wednesday, September 17th, starting at 1:00 p.m. in the Tilden Arts Center lobby. All are welcome to join members of the College community for this informal “Brown Bag” presentation with artist/curator Jane Lincoln.
