Description:
Kids are cooking this summer at Highfield Hall

Highfield Hall’s popular Kids Culinary Arts Academy is preparing to launch its first-ever summer program for children.

Programs for two age groups will be held with the 5 to 9 year old children in the morning from 9 am to noon, and the 10 to 13 year olds in the afternoon from 1 to 4 pm.

The classes are led by Lisa Holmes, Chef-Director of the Kids Culinary Academy at Highfield Hall and a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. Sessions are one week long, begin the first week in July, and cost $190 per session. Registrations may be made online at www.highfieldhall.org. Those with questions may contact Highfield Hall at or email chef@highfieldhall.org.

The culinary program will expose kids to the wonders of cooking, while also teaching them how to be safe in the kitchen. Nutrition will be stressed, along with the advantages of using local or home-grown produce. Children will be able to help raise some of the food for their recipes in Highfield Hall’s new kitchen garden, while other produce will come from Coonamessett Farm’s Community Supported Agriculture program.

Chef Holmes maintains a blog for the Kids Culinary Academy at http://highfieldcooks.typepad.com. The blog is a great source of information for parents interested in gaining insight into the classes. Photos of past culinary classes are posted along with occasional video clips, description of class activities, recipes, and musings from the Chef. The blog is also accessible directly from the Highfield Hall homepage.

Highfield Hall, a center for arts and culture located in a beautifully-restored Victorian mansion, is located at 56 Highfield Drive in Falmouth. Highfield Drive is an extension of Depot Avenue.

Throughout the summer the children’s culinary programming at Highfield Hall continues with 6 week-long, half-day sessions that bring the joy of cooking and the wonderment of gardening together for children ages 5 to 9. All season long kids will tend and explore our new kitchen garden while learning how to incorporate the fruits of their labor into their cooking. We’ll grow a wide variety of herbs and vegetables and will learn the many uses of all the wonderful things that can grow right outside our back door. Produce from Coonamessett Farm will also be utilized as children learn where their food comes from and how it is grown. At summer’s end all children who have participated in the summer program will be invited back for an end of the season harvest picnic.

Chef Lisa Holmes is the Director of the Kids Culinary Academy at Highfield Hall and also teaches adult classes. The Children’s culinary instructor is Lisa Holmes, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and co-author of three books on cooking and nutrition including “Lunch Lessons: Changing the Way We Feed Our Children.” Her kids cooking programs at Highfield Hall have been wildly successful, combining good fun in the kitchen with a solid curriculum about food, nutrition, and cultures.
