Description:
“ROOM WITH A VIEW”
Art Class to be held at Highfield Hall
The elegant interiors of Highfield Hall will provide endless subjects for creative art works this winter as local artist Jan Lhormer leads “A Room with a View.” The class, which is designed for artists of any skill level, will be held on Wednesdays from January 30 to April 30. Class time runs from 3:30 to 6:00 pm and cost for the course is $300. Mediums may include pencil, charcoal, and paints.
Lhormer will lead students in an exploration of drawing ideas as sketches are developed into finished works in a class inspired by the restored nineteenth century mansion. Antique furniture, chandeliers, and bay windows framing a magical landscape provide wonderful subject matter for sharpening skills in drawing and painting. The class will revisit how artists such as Matisse, Bonnard, Vuillard and Vermeer have composed masterpieces from elegant interiors.
Students who create completed works may optionally have their work included in an exhibition of the same name, to appear in the Clark Gallery at Highfield Hall from April 1 through May 2.
Jan Lhormer holds both a BFA and a MFA from The Boston University School of Visual Arts and also earned a bachelor’s degree in Art History from Colorado College. Since 1988 she has taught drawing, painting, paper-making and design. In 1990 she was an artist in residence at Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont and in 1992 at Virginia Center for the Arts, Sweet Briar, Virginia. From 1990 to the present, Jan has exhibited her abstract oil paintings in many prestigious galleries including the Decordova Museum 50th Anniversary Show (2002), Lincoln, Mass.; Cambridge Art Association (2000), Cambridge, Mass.; The Field Gallery, Tisbury, Mass., (1996); Boston Architectural Center (1996); The Crieger-Dane Gallery, Boston (1996); The Bunting Institute, Cambridge, Mass., (1995, 1994). Her abstract oils incorporate gesture, movement and layers of rhythm, inspired by nature and changes in mood and sensation.
